Japanese Watches | Beater B5
WatchesA Japanese watch - the Bronze B4 was only half the story. This new Japanese B5 is the light to the B4’s dark! The prettiest Schofield to date. A muted, blossom coloured dial in a specially textured case similar in finish to traditional Suzuki or Shibuichi items. There are depths to the texture because the machining marks can be seen below the finish. The case back is very special indeed, traditionally made in sterling silver and glass enamel we see a scene of an old plum tree, inspired by a Fuchū manhole cover. We have also made a little lapel pin in the same design, again in silver, for you to wear on your jacket. The strap is plum canvas with a stitch to match the dial. Somebody wrote that the Bronze B4 is Giles’ love letter to Japan, having been a Japanophile his entire life, the B5 needed to reflect elements of Japan the B4 missed - the Sakura, the subtle, beauty and calm. A Japanese watch befitting a culture of elite design and subtlety. The price shown is with UK VAT, if you are outside of the UK, VAT will be deducted at the checkout. Treasure Watch Silver
WatchesThe notion of treasure, whether to hoard it or share it has been a Schofield conundrum from the start. One of our many straplines, ‘All we Make is Treasure’ sums up the Schofield vibe of the coast, lighthouses and the romance of something to be discovered. It has been 10 years this November since we launched Schofield to the world with the Signalman. A polished steel case with a black dial. So we consider this new model an anniversary watch harking back to an earlier time with all the wonder we have imagined over the last decade built in. This watch while called silver is not made from silver. The price shown is with UK VAT, if you are outside of the UK, VAT will be deducted at the checkout. Bronze Beater B4
WatchesThese Japanese watches express the countries aesthetic of simple, crafted, understated, showing more by showing less, still. What better place to exaggerate these ideas than with a new Bronze Beater model? The dial is the colour of Indigo dyed Boro, the case is heavily patinated bronze. The case back depicts Daruma-San a traditional Japanese doll. The character on his chest means good luck. The case back engraving also shows a Tokyo drain cover design of ginkgo and cherry blossom. The watch strap is Japanese Mudcloth. A watch built from Giles Ellis’ love of Japan, its people and their traditions. The attention to detail in their crafts, he believes, is unmatched by any other culture. The price shown is with UK VAT, if you are outside of the UK, VAT will be deducted at the checkout. The Daymark
WatchesThe Daymark is an automatic watch with a green dial, well green and black and a kind of gloomy green at that. The precision German made steel cases are made to the same case dimensions as our classic Signalman but in a one piece construction. The crown is a pull-out type and in the gallery below you can see a nail notch milled into the case. There is also a deep groove running around the circumference of the crown. These two details make it easy to pull the crown out. There is an even more austere version of the watch the Daymark Dark with a black ceramic coated steel case. Powered by a Swiss automatic, ETA 2824. The watch is a 3-hander, hours, minutes and seconds. The case has a 44mm diameter with an exhibition case back. The Daymark Dark
WatchesThe Daymark Dark is an automatic watch with the same case dimensions as our classic Signalman and the other members of the Markers range. Although it has been made from one piece of vapour-blasted stainless steel, the shine and sheen of the Daymark’s case have been sullied by the darkness. A ceramic coating has been applied which introduces the foreboding of the English coastline’s rocky outcrops. Changing the colour changes the atmosphere from one of steely austerity to one of understatement. If the Daymark is a tower rising above the landscape, the Daymark Dark is its shadow, gloomy perhaps but not drab. It is the Daymark’s silhouette. It is the Daymark at night, barely perceptible against the darkness of the night sky and yet present all the same. The crown is a pull-out type and in the gallery below you can see a nail notch milled into the case. There is also a deep groove running around the circumference of the crown. These two details make it easy to pull the crown out. This groove also indicates the ‘affordance’, the action required of the crown, teeth to show rotation and the groove to show pulling in and out. The ceramic coating which is used on the Daymark Dark was chosen for several reasons, including how it looks and its scratch and chemical resistance. Firstly, its ‘traditional matte’ coating that is in the lowest band of gloss that is possible to attain by modern standards. In terms of scratch resistance it is, again, right at one end of the spectrum as it clocks in at a 9H in the Pencil Hardness Test used for coatings which is the most scratch resistant that a coating can be rated. When sprayed continuously with water two and a half times as saline as seawater the ceramic coating was over ten times as resistant to corrosion as stainless steel. Powered by a Swiss automatic, ETA 2824, the watch is a 3-hander, hours, minutes and seconds. The case has a 44mm diameter with an exhibition case back. The price shown is with UK VAT. Raw Bronze Beater B3
WatchesThe Bronze Beater is a bronze watch which is evocative of all that is marine and seaworthy. This is clearly seen in its colours, the inky blue of the ocean’s depths, the bronze synonymous with marine engineering and the elements of light like a night sky, complement one another and form a coherent whole. Patination, whether earned or forced, is a mark of time passed. It is a watch that reflects and represents time with both its tick and colour. It is surely an example of modern treasure. The Beater is an everyday bronze watch stripped of complications. It is designed to be worn without the anxiety of wear because the case is made to age gracefully over time. This is Batch 3 of the Bronze Beater or BBB3. Powered by a Swiss automatic, STP 1-11, the watch is essentially a two and a half hander featuring our Sign-of-Life seconds hand. The case is 44mm in diameter with a deep laser engraving on the back. The price shown is with UK VAT, if you are outside of Europe then VAT will be deducted at the checkout. Patinated Bronze Beater B3
WatchesThe Beater is an everyday bronze watch stripped of complications. It is designed to be worn without the anxiety of wear because the case is made to age gracefully over time. This is Batch 3 of the Bronze Beater or BBB3. The case back of the new B3 took 120 hours of work to complete and the 3 hours of laser engraving per piece really shows in the quality of the finished article. These tiny canvases are hidden to the outside world, known only to a select group of owners and collectors. The new crown, with its exquisite gold nail groove draws your attention to the tiny shining rim on the blue dial. This level of attention to detail is synonymous with the Schofield brand. One case, two finishes and you can choose. The raw bronze watch case has been blasted with a coarse medium that creates a wonderful, slightly sparkly, finish. This will not last long as these cases are designed for those that want the grease of everyday life to change the character of the metal over time. The patinated variety of the bronze watch case is just the same as the raw but has undergone further treatment. To obtain the stabilised oxide coating we dip the raw bronze into baths of dyes and acids which, after washing the cases are burnished to reveal the raw metal in select places – bezel, sides and the edges of the lugs. The patinated finish is permanent with your own scratches and chemistry adding to the character over time. The bronze Beater is a bronze watch which is evocative of all that is marine and seaworthy. Schofield watches are not like other watches. You will realise this the further down the Schofield rabbit hole you go. They are still the ubiquitous round watches that tell the time with two or three hands, it’s not that fact that makes them special. Schofield watches are all about detail. A terrible cliché, but it is true.
Let’s take the Landmark seen here. A sold out limited edition of 12 watches. Special because of the dial with precise concentric alignment of different colours, the Swiss milled appliqués, ‘X’s to mark the treasure. The lume that switches on like a light. Hands that align their ladders so not too obscure. Colours that vibe with the austere British landscape. The list goes on and on. You can’t pitch Schofield watches in an elevator! We recommend you sign up to the Six Pips. Or see the Six Pips Archive.
