Evening all. I have been making watch straps in this way for nearly twenty years. Not choosing them from a catalogue, nor treating them as an unimportant addition to a watch, but beginning with the idea that a strap should frame a watch as a frame does a work of art. And that begins with the material itself.

Over the years I have gathered fabrics for their colour, texture, history, provenance, cachet, rarity or eccentricity. The chosen fabrics are then made to a specific design in Germany, slowly and in small numbers. I do not know of anyone else in the watch industry who approaches straps in quite this way. It is complicated, difficult to keep track of and a lot of work to get online, so perhaps that is why.

Seen together, as they are in this photograph, the straps tell part of the history of Schofield. These ones are particularly special. They were made from the bespoke printed backdrops used at one of our watch shows. We call them OBDs: Original Back-Drops.

I have never thought of our straps as an upsell to a watch. They are small, useful pieces of design in their own right. Made to be worn, changed, kept and collected. Each can completely alter the character of a watch, and each carries its own story. After nearly twenty years, they have become a collection of tiny textiles, part craft, part clothing and wholly little works of art.

This is another OBD variant from earlier this year, made from the backdrop for British Watchmakers’ Day 2026. It is my new favourite among all the Schofield straps and works on pretty much any watch.

I am not sure I have mentioned this, but I have also reduced and unified the price of straps across the entire range.

I have been concentrating on the Unusual Lights lately, hand-making their dials. This one is unique, of course. A green decay, with a haze of lume across the dial. It might be the forest floor, zombie skin or verdigris, depending on how you see it.

I have been sitting on my prototype chair. It is a little like a park bench, but it is also everything I wanted it to be. It is not finished yet. I am still deciding how to make the cushion, and whether this first prototype should be sprayed or veneered. For now, though, I take great pleasure taking my morning coffee on it.
