Bronze Beater B4

Bronze Beater B4

These Japanese watches express the countries aesthetic of simple, crafted, understated, showing more by showing less, still. What better place to exaggerate these ideas than with a new Bronze Beater model? The dial is the colour of Indigo dyed Boro, the case is heavily patinated bronze. The case back depicts Daruma-San a traditional Japanese doll. The character on his chest means good luck. The case back engraving also shows a Tokyo drain cover design of ginkgo and cherry blossom. The watch strap is Japanese Mudcloth. A watch built from Giles Ellis’ love of Japan, its people and their traditions. The attention to detail in their crafts, he believes, is unmatched by any other culture.

Japanese bronze watch case info

Great care is taken over the patination process; the wholly machined and finished British made case is deeply patinated and not burnished back to a brighter finish like our Beater B3 model. The resulting oxide coating is thick and stable with an occasional purple bloom. the Japanese call patination the grease of life and do not obsess about removing it to a bright polish like we do in the West.

Dial and strap info

Classic Schofield in the layout, open and uncluttered designed for legibility, hours at cardinal points including a slash-0 at 12. Darts between the numbers and a minute track bordering precisely the stepped level and colour change in the dial. Using Super-LumiNova C3 with a green emission. Most obvious is the luminescent ring around the outer circumference akin to the original Schofield Blacklamp. The new hand set features a play on the original Sign-of-Life hand found on some Beater models, here it is a counter poise only, indicating time is passing but without the need for to the second time-telling. The hands are brushed gold and match the gold ring in the middle of the crown.

Traditional Japanese Mudcloth pale face. The base fabric is initially soaked in a natural mordant made from plant seeds which helps fix the dye to the fabric and prevent fading. The mud is then applied by hand to one side of the fabric which is laid out to dry in the sun. At first the mud is grey but the fabric is then stored inside and over time the colour develops into this warm rust brown colour. It takes 6 months in storage to fix the dye after which it is washed and sun dried once again.

Strap size guide

Schofield watch straps are available in three sizes; regular and long and uni. For fine tweaking read on.

The regular sized watch straps are 110mm on the non buckle side and 75 on the buckle side. The long straps are 115mm on the non buckle side and 90mm on the buckle side. Uni straps have 115mm long non buckle side and a 78mm long buckle side.

If your wrists are less than 19cm (7.5 inches) in circumference then we suggest you choose a regular or uni length strap. For wrists that are more than 19cm (7.5 inches) in circumference then we suggest a long strap. With wrists approximately 19cm in circumference then a longer strap will give more of a tail; most guys opt for a regular sized watch strap with a shorter tail.

We has introduced a new uni strap size. It falls between our traditional long and regular sized straps. Only some straps are available in Uni, others are still the regular and long sizes.

Bronze watch care

The Heavily patinated bronze case will mark and scratch over time but rather than staying bright they will oxidise over a few weeks and blend in. You may see some polishing around the bezel as the oxide is worn away by shirt cuffs. You can read this article on how to clean a Bronze watch. We do recommend for the Japanese bronze watch finish that you don’t bother with anything too harsh and just use a polishing cloth.
